10 Horror Movies Which Insult Your Intelligence

6. Secret Window

Alien Covenant
Columbia Pictures

This Stephen King adaptation follows author Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp), who's been suffering from writer's block since he discovered his wife, Amy, cheated on him. Just to add to his problems, a stranger, John Shooter (John Turturro), accuses Mort of plagiarising his work.

When several murders occur in the area, Mort is certain Shooter is to blame. And though Mort's assertion is correct, it's not in the way he thinks. In the third act, it's revealed Mort has dissociative identity disorder, causing him to manifest a malevolent persona called Shooter to carry out his darkest wishes.

By the time Amy confronts Mort, the Shooter identity has utterly consumed her husband's mind. She's also horrified to learn the name "Shooter" symbolises Mort's intentions to... you guessed it... shoot her. As such, Secret Window ends with Mort murdering his wife and getting away scot-free.

The split-personality twist is so predictable and lazy, it's hard to believe Secret Window utilised it. And as mentioned for I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, having a villain put a clue in their name always comes across as silly.

Even though Secret Window was thoroughly engaging for a while, it completely crumbles at the finishing line.
