10 Horror Remakes You Didn’t Know Were Coming In 2019
4. The Fly
The Original: David
Cronenberg’s legendary body horror wowed audiences back in 1986 with its
gruesome special effects and star Jeff Goldblum’s brilliant performance as
eccentric scientist Seth Brundle as he descends into madness and mutates
himself into – you guessed it – a fly. Or rather, the Brundlefly.
Itself a remake of a 1958 film, The Fly was a rare mainstream success for Cronenberg earning a respectable $60.6 million against a rather modest budget of just $9 million.
The Remake: It’s still early days but last spring 20th Century Fox announced a remake was in the works with up-and-coming filmmaker J.D. Dillard in negotiations to direct.
It’s been radio silence since then though but given how previous previously proposed remakes – one to be helmed by director Todd Lincoln and another by Cronenberg himself – eventually disappeared into the ether it’s understandable they’re staying tight-lipped.
That said they’re got reason to be somewhat confident despite the massive feat that taking on a classic like The Fly is. If Dillard – who took Sundance by storm with his debut feature Sleight and is set to exercise his horror chops with the soon-to-be released survival horror Sweetheart – does indeed direct he could possibly do it justice.
