10 Horror Sequels Scrapped For INSANE Reasons

6. Saw VI's Box Office Performance - Saw VIII

The original run of Saw movies concluded with the seventh film, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, in 2010, but this actually wasn't the original plan at all.

After the completion of Saw VI, the franchise was set to wrap up with a two-part finale across Saw VII and Saw VIII, but this all changed after Saw VI's release weekend.

Despite scoring some of the series' best reviews, Saw VI massively underperformed at the box office - an outcome attributed to both the poor reception to Saw V and stiff competition from the recently released Paranormal Activity.

As a result, Lionsgate panicked and decided to scrap Saw VIII, effectively forcing the filmmakers to discard much of the planned story for the original two-part finale and instead conclude everything in a single movie.

This likely goes a way to explaining why Saw 3D was such a chaotic mess, though ironically it ended up one of the series' highest-grossing entries at that point, almost doubling the gross of Saw VI and probably leaving Lionsgate kicking themselves for getting cold feet.

We did eventually get an eighth Saw film with 2017's Jigsaw, but it was obviously totally different from the original Saw VIII, mounted more as a soft reboot for the franchise, albeit one that was indifferently received by most fans.
