10 Horror Sequels That Are Actually Worth Watching

2. Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Saw X
Warner Bros.

There’s a case to be made that Evil Dead has never actually been good, at least not in the conventional sense. Sam Raimi’s series started off rather schlocky, with a small budget and weak lead in Bruce Campbell, before remaking itself with a surprisingly re-energised Campbell but a choppy and ramshackle plot across two uneven films, and then rebooting itself two decades later in an instalment that, while the scariest of all the films so far, divided fans.

Enter Evil Dead Rise, the sequel-reboot of the sequel-reboot, which once again takes the core concept of evil demons possessing a small, unfortunate group - this time a family - and transplants it far away from the series’ established characters and chronology. The film throws Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland together as Beth and Ellie, estranged sisters who face their literal and metaphorical demons as the Deadites descend on Ellie’s apartment.

Despite having only one previous feature film credit, director Lee Cronin does a masterful job with the raw material of the franchise, adopting an extending the mythos and honouring both the previous reboot and the original films in his action, horror and characters. It feels fresh and new simultaneously and reinvigorates a troubled franchise. Now if we can just bring the three series’ lead together for the next instalment we’ll be home safe.
