10 Horror TV Shows With Terrifying Surprises

5. Angela - The Exorcist

The Haunting Of Hill House Bent Neck Lady Nell
FOX

Ten years ago, if someone suggested that a TV show set in the same universe as William Friedkin’s legendary film about demonic possession could be good, they would have been booed, put in the stocks and had tomatoes thrown at them like the village fool they were.

Then, in 2016, The Exorcist series came out, and everyone had to eat their words. It was absolutely terrifying and held together by a fantastic cast of characters. Even without any familiar faces or themes, viewers began to wonder how this series was linked to the original story.

The answer lay with Geena Davis’ matriarch, Angela. Her daughter Casey is showing signs of possession, and she enlists the help of two priests. Angela seems to know an awful lot about the subject, and the fifth episode of the show dropped a huge bombshell that explained why.

In the episode, Angela recalls her difficult childhood to Father Tomas, explaining that she had a difficult episode when she was young that she can’t recall in detail due to the trauma. But her mother kept using the story to make money, and so Angela changed her name to escape. Only Angela Rance is an anagram… an anagram for ‘A Clean Regan’.

The episode ends with Sharon Gless arriving at the door, announcing herself as Chris MacNeil, looking for her daughter. Angela was Regan this whole time?! The best thing about this twist is that viewers were left to figure it out for themselves rather than being spoonfed the answers. Our minds were blown and the series shifted gears from really good, to bloody brilliant.
