10 Horror Video Games That Turned 20 In 2022
4. Buffy The Vampire Slayer
A home video game console release came rather late in the day for Buffy, considering it was curtains for the TV show in 2003. Nevertheless, 2002's Buffy The Vampire Slayer was well received, and benefitted from the strides the industry had made since the show began in 1996.
Developed by The Collective, this single-player beat 'em up sees players take control of the titular slayer back in her high school ass-kicking days, bringing together fan-favourites like Drusilla and the Master, and new villains such as Materiani, the Dreamers and Scylla.
Happening upon a plot to resurrect the Master, Buffy has to go up against Spike, Drusilla and all manner of vampires, skeletons and demons in her quest to prevent his return.
With a script written by Buffy novelist Christopher Golden, the game feels true to the source material and scored well with players and critics, thanks to its immersive storyline, Tomb Raider-esque gameplay model and fun combat sequences.
Unfortunately for some long-time fans, and PlayStation devotees, Buffy The Vampire Slayer was an Xbox exclusive, despite beginning in development as a PlayStation game, before moving through Dreamcast, Windows and landing on the big black box.
