10 Horror Video Games That Turned 20 In 2022
3. Resident Evil Zero
It wouldn't be the early noughties without a Resident Evil video game, and the survival horror franchise delivered not one but two in 2002! But more on that later.
Resident Evil Zero serves as a prequel to the series' first entry (hence the Zero), and charts the story of S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Service) Officer Rebecca Chambers and convicted former Force Reconnaissance Officer Billy Coen as they fight zombies in an abandoned Umbrella training facility in the Arklay Mountains.
Though development on Zero began for the Nintendo 64 back in 1998, Capcom encountered limitations with the console's memory capacity and switched over to the GameCube, where it was released as an exclusive, with a refreshed gameplay style that included the ability to swap between the two characters and use their unique abilities.
That wasn't all that had changed, however, as the game was a little tougher, a lot scarier and far more involved than previous entries, featuring new layers of strategy and puzzles.
Unfortunately, amongst all this innovation, the series' cumbersome tank controls (up to move forward, down to move backward, left and right to rotate) remained. Nevertheless, the game was remastered in 2016 and sold well, despite the lack of updates as far as gameplay is concerned.
