10 Hyped 2019 Movies That Disappointed Everyone
2. Dark Phoenix
The X-Men franchise has been a mixed bag of highs and lows to say the least. For every Logan, Deadpool, or First Class, there is a Last Stand, Origins, or Apocalypse. Though Fox tried to use Days of Future Past as a reset button of sorts, if anything this just complicated things further.
Questions about the state of the timeline(s) aside, the very poor Apocalypse left a bad taste in the mouth after Logan went back in time. Dark Phoenix was the studio's chance at redemption, and its opportunity to finish the 19 year long franchise properly before handing the property over to Marvel Studios.
To say they missed the mark is a wild understatement. There was nothing particularly compelling about the plot, the cast didn't seem to be interested, and Jessica Chastain's monotonous villain is entirely forgettable. With a score of 5.8 on IMDb, a paltry 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a box office gross of just $250 million against a budget of approximately $200 million, there are very few that would say Dark Phoenix was even worth doing.
A far more fitting end to the franchise would have been 2017's Logan. This saw the end of Wolverine's story, and the Westchester incident would have served as a conclusion for the team after battling Apocalypse. Would it have been a perfect end? No. But it would have certainly meant more as a goodbye to the X-Men than rehashing the Dark Phoenix story for the second time in 13 years.
