10 Iconic Movie Scenes Made Possible By Enforced Method Acting

7. The Director Dropped Alan Rickman Without Warning Him - Die Hard (1988)

Hans Gruber, as played brilliantly by the one and only Alan Rickman, is considered to be one of the greatest villains in cinematic history. As the foil to Bruce Willis' cop John McClane in "awesome best action movie ever" Die Hard, the duo's frequent, hilarious banter is the best thing about the entire flick. But what's a great movie villain without a great, memorable death? That's precisely what director John McTiernan thought when it came time to off his German baddie. If you've seen the movie, you'll know that Hans Gruber plummets to his death by way of thirty stories. But instead of allowing Alan Rickman to do his job and, you know, "act" shocked as he fell, McTiernan opted for something less conventional. When Rickman was suspended forty feet above a crash mat and told that he'd be dropped on the count of 3, the director decided to drop his actor on 2, instead, which accounts for the incredibly shocked look you can see on Rickman's face as he presumably imagines that something has gone terribly, terribly wrong and that he's about to die. Nope, just your insane director, Alan.
