Best known for her feature debut The Babadook (2014), Kent is an up-and-coming horror director that any serious fans of the genre must take note of. The film follows a recently widowed mother and her young son who is plagued by the evil presence of a monster from a children's book.

Essie Davis' performance of Amelia blends a striking cocktail of fear, grief, despair, and the maternal drive to go on. However, Kent's greatest success is her use of tension, pacing, and imagery. The design of the monster could easily be viewed as hokey, how which Kent chooses to reveal him to the audience is masterful.

In 2018 Kent's sophomore horror feature, The Nightingale, premiered at The 75th Venice International Film Festival. The film will be released in August of this year, giving us horror fans a new twisted story to look forward to.
