10 Incredibly Annoying Characters Who Almost Ruined 2013 Movies

3. Carolyn - The Conjuring

In the wake of the success of the brilliant performances of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the real-life paranormal investigators most famous for their involvement with the Amityville Horror case during the 1970s, it's somewhat unsurprising that the other characters were less memorable. That's not to say that some of the cast - like Lili Taylor (Carolyn) and Ron Livingston (her husband, Roger), but the former's understated performance is mishandled entire by the way the script presents her downfall into insanity at the end of the film. It's a spirited performance by Taylor, but there's very little authentic in her demonic possession. That might seem an odd observation to make, but there has to be some humanity at the core of something so supernatural or it just becomes farcical, and cartoonish, as it did here, unfortunately. All of the writhing, screaming, and yelling was mostly subtracted from by the cartoonish makeup that was slathered on Taylor, and appearing/reappearing bruises also didn't help the film maintain any sense of immersion.
