10 Incredibly Subtle Ways Movies Gave Away Their Endings

6. Goal!'s FIFA Prediction

Santiago Goal
Buena Vista Pictures

It might not be the smartest blockbuster ever made, but for fans of football team Newcastle United (who otherwise generally have very little to be proud about), Goal inspires special affection. It's your typical rags to riches story of a young hopeful plucked from South American obscurity and thrust into the competitive world of Premier League football. It also features some of the worst native Geordie accents you'll ever hear.

And despite it being a fairly easy watch without too much complexity beyond its fairly rote story and morality tales of excess and staying grounded, there is one very clever little moment in there.

One scene in which star Santiago Munez (played by Kuno Becker) challenges fellow player Gavin Harris (Alessandro Nivola) about his unprofessional behaviour begins with Harris playing FIFA on his PlayStation. We see his player score a screamer of a freekick from the right hand side of the pitch, well outside the box against a team in red (in this case Arsenal), which is EXACTLY what happens in the film's conclusion when Munez scores a similarly impressive free-kick to win a crucial game against Liverpool. Who play in red, of course.
