4. The Last House On The Left

One of the few Nasties to be recycled, redistributed and remade, The Last House on the Left was created in the early 1970's, but became part of the Video Nasty fad due to its undeniably grotesque content. The film showcases a raw, young filmmaker at work - a man named Wes Craven, who went on to direct some of the most popular horror films of all time, including the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, and the quadrilogy of Scream movies. His first release of Last House on the Left depicts two unsuspecting teens who are cornered and raped by a gang of escaped convicts. The criminals proceed to take shelter at a nearby home which turns out to be one of the victims' parents place, and upon discovering the truth, the parents seek to enforce their own brand of justice. The Last House on the Left is an undeniably difficult to watch - and remained banned in the UK until receiving 31 seconds of cuts for a 2003 DVD release - but is also one of the more artistically proficient Video Nasties, receiving substantial critical acclaim even during its years of cinematic exile. A certain Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad stars as one of the evil trio in the 2009 remake, which varied to the original in terms of particular plot points, character names, and murder methods. Whilst Jesse Pinkman had his flaws, Paul's character Francis in this Video Nasty rehash is so repulsive that he'd be enough to send Heisenberg scattering for the hills.
