10 Insane Alternate Endings To 2017's Biggest Movies (So Far)

6. Jim, Aurora, And 5,000 Passengers Die - Passengers

Passengers, which chronicles the adventures of Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) after they find themselves awakened too early on a intergalactic flight to a new world, was unveiled to mixed reviews, with many critics citing the movie as "creepy" due to the actions of its male protagonists, and rightly so.

The film ends with Aurora coming to terms with Jim's selfish actions, however, (he wakes her up decades earlier than scheduled for a bit of company after his own pod malfunctions) and deciding to live out the rest of her life with him alone, which ended up feeling a little cutesy and a bit Hollywood for it to ring true.

But the movie wasn't always supposed to end that way. In the original screenplay, screenwriter Jon Spaihts wrote a far darker climax to the movie - one that is devastating and almost brilliant in how insanely bleak it is. Because the original ending sees the Avalon's computer malfunctioning, which in turn causes the ship's entire system to reboot... which results in each and every single one of the ship's sleeping passengers, of which there are roughly 5,000, to be ejected into space.

The film then takes another sharp turn, with the Avalon successfully reaching Homestead II, with both Aurora and Jim long dead, but the ship repopulated. Somehow, apparently, they found a way to access the ship's sperm bank.

It's a crazy ending in terms of how many people actually end up getting killed, including the two lead characters. And maybe this one would have actually proven to be way more interesting, albeit more depressing, than the ending we got.
