The Rumour

It wasn't long after Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced that fans began to speculate on whether or not the film would include Nova.

This only intensified when Gunn's good pal Nathan Fillion joined the cast, and the rumour mill worked overtime claiming that he would indeed play the cult fave superhero.

Gunn denying the rumour shortly before the film's release didn't help at all, only compounding fans' conviction that Nova would appear, most likely in a sequel-teasing credits scene.

What Actually Happened

Nova was sadly nowhere to be seen and Fillion's role ultimately amounted to a mere voice cameo, voicing a CGI alien inmate in the Nova Corps' prison The Kyln, who briefly crosses paths with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).

On the plus side, this part is insignificant enough that it wouldn't prevent Fillion from playing Nova in the future, though one suspects that Marvel will be seeking a younger actor to lead their currently in-the-works Nova project.
