3. Amity Has Been Covering Up Shark Attacks For Years - Jaws
Steven Spielberg's straight-forward yet superbly executed blockbuster - the one that started the trend, remember - might not naturally lend itself to a plot twist, but when you think about it, it's really quite brilliant. It's well documented in the movie how the Mayor is reluctant to close the beaches on Amity Island, for fear of lost profits from waning tourism, and what if this extended to him and his lackeys planting the dead tiger shark, in order to put everyone at ease and allow the beaches to stay open? He
did refuse Brody and Hooper a chance to check the shark's stomach contents, after all. The playing off of the Mayor against Chief Brody becomes even more tense when we think of it this way; what if people have been getting eaten for years, and before smart cookies like Brody and Hooper came along, it's just been summarily covered up as "missing persons" incidents and so on? It is noted in the film that this has happened before (accompanied by the quote, "That dastardly Mayor!"), again adding fuel to the fire that there's even more sinister goings-on in Amity than meets the eye.
