10 Insane Movies You Didn't Know Were Based On True Stories
1. The Conjuring Series
There's no shortage of horror movies which have liberally taken inspiration from true stories: take the reported demonic possession which informed The Exorcist, or the troubled history of the real house that inspired The Amityville Horror.
However, The Conjuring movies are that little bit closer to reality. Ed and Lorraine Warren, the husband and wife ghost hunters portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, really did work in paranormal investigation, starting out in the 1950s and continuing all the way into the 1990s.
The cases the Warrens worked on included the notorious Amityville; the allegedly possessed doll Annabelle, featured both in 2013's The Conjuring and two subsequent spin-off movies; and the Enfield Poltergeist, as featured in The Conjuring 2.
Unsurprisingly, accounts vary on the veracity of everything the Warrens got up, with many sceptics dismissing them as frauds. But even if the movies don't give us the most true-to-life reflection of their work, there's no question the Warrens left a mark in their field.
