The Scream series has a torrid history with script leaks causing entire scenes and even endings to be re-shot, so it's safe to say that the upcoming fifth film will be hoping to keep a tight lid on spoilers.

And so, it's easy to rubbish rumours that Selena Gomez will effectively be playing the Drew Barrymore role in the new film, but a decidedly more believable rumour suggests that one of the original movie's killers may be rising from the dead.

There are rumblings that Matthew Lillard, who played one of the two original Ghostfaces, Stu Macher, will somehow return for Scream 5 (or as it's simply titled, Scream).

With set photos teasing a return to Stu's house from the first film, many think Stu may have inexplicably survived having a TV dropped on his head - and remember, this was a giant, chunky CRT TV in the days before slender HDTVs were a thing.

But there is some precedent here, given that Lillard revealed back in 2018 that the original ending for Scream 3 saw Stu unveiled as the mastermind who, despite being imprisoned for the killings, was training the young new killers to become Ghostface from jail.

The kibosh was put on these plans after the Columbine shootings happened, and honestly, even for the Scream series that sounds pretty absurd.

But with Scream 5 taking place 25 years after the original film, it's a little more believable that Stu could've either been released from prison or escaped, and in turn served as the mentor for a new generation of killers.

At the same time it's still pretty out-there given how definitively Stu appeared to be killed in the first film, but never say never.
