10 Insanely Expensive Movies You Forgot Even Existed

2. The Legend Of Tarzan

The Great Wall Matt Damon
Warner Bros.

The Legend of Tarzan is almost the living embodiment of blockbuster mediocrity. Based on a pre-existing property that has plenty of name recognition without having a diehard fanbase that can drag the production over hot coals before it's even been released? Check. A director experienced dealing with big budgets and visual effects? Check. A cast comprised of movie stars, rising talents and veteran character actors to round out the ensemble? Of course.

Gauging people's interest in even seeing a $180m Tarzan movie would have been a good start, and David Yates' tentpole release more than lived up to it's pre-release billing of being something that nobody had asked for. Reviews weren't awful, but they weren't great either. The box office was solid enough to turn a profit, but not enough to launch a franchise. It was just... okay. And by today's standards, that simply isn't enough.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
