10 Intense Horror Movie Scenes You Couldn’t Watch

The intensity of a scene doesn’t necessarily have to be rooted in stomach-churning gore. Sometimes a scene can be made unbearably tense thanks to superb pacing and suspense designed to put viewers on absolute edge.

One such sequence that'll have audiences willing themselves to look away from the screen is the painting sequence from The Conjuring 2.

Before paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) contend with a family plagued by a poltergeist, Lorraine finds herself terrorised by another malevolent spirit that takes the form of a demonic nun. And it's this monstrosity which takes centre stage in the heart stopping sequence in question.

Beginning with the demon’s sudden appearance in the Warrens’ home, the film immediately begins to build up to the inevitable scare when Lorraine follows it into the next room where a very creepy picture of the demon hangs on the wall.

From here then tension continues to build as ominous music plays, lights go out, and doors slam before viewers watch the demon’s shadow make its way across the walls to the sinister painting.

Director James Wan ensures the tension is held at a fever pitch throughout so that audiences dread the demon’s impending arrival.
