10 Intense Movies That Captivated The Hell Out Of You

8. Mad Max: Fury Road

If you attempted to argue that Mad Max: Fury Road was the most exciting movie ever made, few would likely try and stop you. In other words, action-wise, it doesn't get much better than this: George Miller's modern tour-de-force, incidentally a reboot of his own franchise, with Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson as the titular character.

What separates Fury Road from other action vehicles is that is essentially stands as one, lengthy action scene for the sum of its runtime. Once Max escapes from the confines of a hellish prison and hits the road, the film essentially plays out as a singular, glorious chase sequence with very few pitstops. Which makes it impossible to look away. The film never lets its foot off of the throttle and it's mesmerising.

Shot with as little CGI as possible, on location in Africa, Fury Road feels gritty and real in all the ways modern blockbusters don't. But wait: just as Max and his posse appear to reach their goal, Miller has the audacity to make an unexpected left turn as it's revealed they need to go back exactly the same way they came.

It could have soured the experience, but instead this narrative switcharoo injects the movie's final reel with a crazy, unrivalled rush of pure adrenaline.
