10 Killer Horror Movies To Watch This Friday The 13th

8. Wes Craven's New Nightmare

New Nightmare
New Line Cinema

Sad, but true: the last decent Elm Street movie appeared in 1994, meaning that an entire generation has grown up knowing only Freddy Vs Jason and the Michael Bay remake. Ugh.

Tellingly, New Nightmare is the only sequel directed by Wes Craven, who effortlessly avoids the cartoonish slapstick of the earlier films and turns the concept in on itself, delivering a movie where Heather Langenkamp (as “Herself”) slowly comes to realize that the Elm Street films were protecting the world from a demon. Worse, the demon has taken on Freddy’s persona and is acting out the events described in Wes Craven’s new script, which doesn’t yet have an ending.

Two years before he reinvigorated the slasher movie with Scream, Craven returned to his best known franchise and delivered the most thoughtful installment to date. The results are witty and sophisticated, particularly for a 90s horror sequel, though it was still another nine years before Freddy returned to screens for his anticlimactic grudge match with Jason. It wasn’t worth the wait, so check out New Nightmare instead.
