10 Least Deserving Oscar Winners Ever

5. Crash: Best Picture

Easily the dirt worst Best Picture winner of the new millennium, 2004's Crash shocked the world when it upset Brokeback Mountain. While Brokeback was the favourite, it's worth noting every other nominee was also a better film than Crash: Capote, Munich and Good Night, and Good Luck were all top notch in their own right.

When asked about his film's inexplicable victory, director Paul Haggis said, "Was it the best film of the year? I don't think so."

A sappy melodrama about how racism is not a good thing, Crash also managed to steal Oscars for its humdrum screenplay and questionable editing.

Crash is by no means an abysmal film, it holds some excellent performances, particularly from Matt Dillion and Terence Howard. It simply was not on the level of its competitors at the time, making its win egregious at best.

In 2015, the Hollywood Reporter polled hundreds of Academy members, asking them to recast their ballots over the years. An interesting study of what winners have (and have not) stood the test of time, Crash was among several Best Picture winners to be switched. With the benefit of hindsight, voters anointed Brokeback Mountain the would've/should've/could've victor.
