10 Lesser Known Horror Movies That Are 100% Worth Your Time
3. Violation
Here's something for those with a strong stomach now, because Violation is a horror-drama that pulls no punches and makes little attempt to shy away from its deeply uncomfortable subject matter.
An angry deconstruction of the "rape-revenge" subgenre, Violation follows a woman, Miriam (Madeleine Sims-Fewer, who also co-wrote and directed it) seeking revenge after being sexually assaulted by her brother-in-law, Dylan (Jesse LaVercombe).
But this isn't a fist-pumping, righteously feminist taking back of the controversial subgenre - this is a deeply ugly and unpleasant film about the impact of both sexual assault and the further implications of pursuing vengeance.
Madeleine Sims-Fewer gives a jaw-dropping performance in the lead role, her thousand-yard stare somehow more unforgettable than some of the film's more nauseatingly brutal imagery.
Again, Violation categorically isn't for everyone, but if you're in the market for an extreme horror that dares to take itself totally seriously, this is an incredible piece of work.
