8. The Illuminati Are Hugely Important - Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

The first trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness damn-near broke the Internet when it revealed the presence of Patrick Stewart's Professor Xavier, who could be heard saying of an imprisoned Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), "We should tell him the truth."

Though we only saw an out-of-focus glimpse of Xavier's side profile in the trailer and were given no impression of who he was talking to, it was still enough to send fans into a hype-heavy frenzy.

Even those unfamiliar with the Illuminati from the comics believed that a large portion of the movie would be devoted to Xavier and a council of multiversal superheroes meeting and likely teaming up with Doctor Strange.

And while you can blame fans for overhyping themselves here, considering that Multiverse of Madness was the first MCU movie to follow Spider-Man: No Way Home - whose marketing never revealed Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, to enormous box office success - it was reasonable to expect the same strategy here.

And so, many MCU fans were left underwhelmed when the Illuminati sequence ultimately contained a fairly unremarkable suite of heroes beyond John Krasinski's Reed Richards. And to rub salt in the wound, the entire scene lasted barely five minutes.

It was less an important part of the story than a mildly amusing, fan-serving detour which had no real impact on the narrative, to the disappointment of many.
