1. Johnny Depp As Doctor Strange
This is a pre-emptive suggestion, as opposed to a casting change. Rumours have flown around for awhile about Jim Caviezel and Patrick Dempsey both being on a short list of who may possibly play Dr. Strange. Both would not be bad choices; in truth. Both have the general look, although Dempsey is more comic book accurate. However, the character is going to need to be played by someone who can live in the skin of this odd and intriguing character, who has an unusually large amount of importance in the comic book world as much as he may in Phase 3 of the MCU. While many of the yet to be secured (rather, rumored) casting choices are not bad. None of them are truly great; at least not as great as Johnny Depp would be in the role. Various of Depps roles could easily have been listed as parallel to Doctor Strange, even if we're talking about realistic, non-superhero characters. Depp's role in The 9th Gate alone is very close to what we can expect from an occult approach. His character roles in any variety of Gore Verbinski and Tim Burton films have also prepared him for a serious comic book character that can either be done horribly or extremely well; if cast correctly. Not only does Depp look like Strange, but he has mastered a variety of ticks and mannerisms he uses for his more peculiar characters. While Stephen Strange is far from peculiar, he will be using and saying dialogue that will be extremely difficult to except in a live action film. It will be borderline cheese on cheese writing. To bring it to life you need an actor that can live inside this type of dialogue and effectively throw it out to the world believably. As strange as this sounds, it's like certain rock stars that can wear certain clothes and get away with it. This is a very specific role, that with the greatest of realistic adaptations needs to be handled by a veteran character actor. Consider Nick Cages role in The Sorceror's Aprentice, and you'll understand exactly what I mean...Yikes! These are all commonly looked at characters that many people from the hardcore, to the mainstream, wouldn't mind seeing replaced or redone. The success of the MCU as a whole is its drive to produce films, period. To put out as much material as possible that interconnects across the spectrum, to not film in bubbles. It's an astonishing feat in film making. While we love the casting for the most part that Disney and Marvel are accomplishing for these beloved characters.
