10 Massively Underrated Movies From The 1990s

3. Mystery Men

Strange Days Ralph Fiennes
Universal Pictures

Considering how much the superhero genre has exploded over the last two decades, Mystery Men feels like it was released ahead of its time.

Debuting in summer 1999, this ridiculous comedy stars Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, and Hank Azaria as a team of misfit superheroes with some truly unusual powers.

There's the fearsome Mr. Furious, whose main ability is... getting angry and throwing tantrums. He's joined by the mighty Blue Raja, who possesses the gift of... accurate cutlery-throwing. And who can forget the formidable Shoveler, a man with some truly above-average shovelling skills. Blimey, the Avengers must be quaking in their boots!

With modern films like Deadpool and The Suicide Squad poking fun at the superhero genre and playing with its tropes, fans would absolutely devour Mystery Men if it were released today. Forget Zoolander 2 - this is the older property that Stiller should've tried to bring back.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
