10 MCU Moments Better Than Their Comic Origin

5. The Avengers' Opposing Ideologies During Civil War

The Civil War storyline in the comics and MCU shook the foundation of each universe and effectively tore the Avengers apart and had long-lasting consequences on both versions of the team. The events that lead up to the titular clash are similar (an oversight by a relatively new hero leads to the death of innocents) and disagreements between the heroes on the impact the newly created legally binding document (the Superhero Registration Act and Sokovia Accords in the comics and movies, respectively) have on the heroes' personal liberties and freedoms.

The Civil War seen in the comics was characterized by betrayal, mistrust, and tested bonds between heroes such as the Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic and especially between Captain America and Iron Man. Their opposing ideologies led to Iron Man going down a dark path of imprisoning his former teammates in the Negative Zone and recruiting'reformed' villains. This painted the story in black and white, an act that some saw as robbing the story of moral complexity.

The film adaptation had fewer characters in the story but the main conflict worked due to the main heroes' motivation being more relatable and noble (albeit somewhat misguided) and the story had more personal stakes than its comic counterpart.
