10 More Amazing Trailers That Tricked You Into Seeing Terrible Horror Movies
3. The Bye Bye Man
Conceptually, The Bye Bye Man should be petrifying. The nebulous entity becomes stronger every time someone thinks about him. The trailer makes it clear that anyone being tormented by the titular monster can't speak about him without magnifying his power. And if his victims dare to say his name, they're done for.
Despite the fact boogeyman stories have been done to death, The Bye Bye Man appeared to be teeming with potential.
Oh, how very wrong we were. Apart from Doug Jones' commanding performance as The Bye Bye Man, there's nothing redeemable that can be said about this travesty.
The dreary exposition dumps sound like they were written by AI. Every "scary scene" is slathered with embarrassing CGI. The jump-scares can be seen coming a mile away. The PG-13 gore is insultingly tame. Viewers couldn't care less when the characters are picked off, since every one of them is generic, one-note, or annoying.
Worst of all, The Bye Bye Man never comes across as scary. Thanks to a large selection of unintentionally hilarious moments, this trainwreck could easily be mistaken as a parody.
