2. The Village
M. Night Shyamalan's trailers tend to leave viewers terrified and engrossed, despite giving away the bare minimum.
The promotions for The Village perfectly exemplify this notion. This folktale thriller centres around isolated villagers who are unable to leave their home since the woods are populated by vicious monsters.
Though moviegoers are desperate to catch a glimpse of the creatures, they never appeared in any of the marketing. However, the trailer is so beautifully shot, something as simple as Joaquin Phoenix's character walking into a forest is nerve-wracking.
Sadly, The Village isn't as entertaining or as provocative as the marketing indicated. Many of the actors are wasted, especially Brendan Gleeson and Sigourney Weaver. The twist requires so many leaps in logic, it's hard not to laugh when the truth is revealed.
Even though James Newton Howard's soundtrack is gorgeous and Bryce Dallas Howard's performance is phenomenal, there's no question The Village fell short of expectations.
