With ten new characters being introduced as part of the Eternals race, not to mention other characters such as the Celestials, Deviants, and Dane Whitman, there was a lot going on in Eternals. This stretched to a lot of different characters and dynamics between them.

One of the movie’s central themes was the romantic relationship between Sersi and Ikaris. The two were married for centuries, however fans never truly connected with them as a couple. Even with a shoe-horned “sex scene”, the whole thing felt far too forced, and no one truly bought it.

There was however, a different relationship within the movie had a far greater impact on fans, that of Makkari and Druig. There was nothing forced, and no outright confirmation of any romance between them, but there was just a hint of something there, a look or a nudge of the shoulder, that left fans wanting more.

This dynamic was never actually planned, but was instead added into the script after Lauren Ridloff and Barry Keoghan first met. According to Chloé Zhao, there were sparks between the two actors immediately, and she felt it would have been a waste not to bring such incredible off-screen chemistry onto the screen for all to see.
