George A. Romero's third zombie outing follows a group of survivors who have sought sanctuary in a missile bunker. One of the occupants, Dr. Logan, spends his time performing experiments on an imprisoned revenant called Bub, eager to see if Bub's kind can learn and adapt. Although Bub starts off as a typical brain-scoffing zombie, Logan's tests allow him to regain a semblance of humanity.

When the complex's leader, Captain Rhodes, learns Logan is feeding his dead soldiers to placate Bub, he has the eccentric scientist shot dead. Once the zombies break into the complex, Bub has the perfect opportunity to escape or devour the survivors, but after finding Logan's body, he mourns for him, proving he's no longer a mindless creature.

As powerful as this moment is, the most defining scene is during the climax. As Rhodes is frantically running through the building, Bub corners the captain and shoots him. He then leads Rhodes into a horde of zombies, who tear him limb from limb. As they munch on the devious captain's body, Bub salutes him, proving he has more humanity than Rhodes ever did.
