Even with actress Rebecca Gayheart having those huge, expressive eyes and her character sharing a surname with Psycho's killer Norman Bates, few still pegged Brenda Bates as Urban Legend's parka-wearing serial murderer.

It's a credit to Gayheart that she persuasively plays Brenda as one of the more demure and unassuming central characters, yet without immediately drawing suspicion upon herself as a result - this being a horror movie and all.

It's eventually revealed that she's been the killer all along, enacting revenge against her "best friend" Natalie (Alicia Witt) for causing a car accident which killed her fiancé and high school sweetheart. At this point, Gayheart's performance pulls a delightful 180, all wide-eyed and gleefully mugging in gloriously entertaining fashion as she attempts, in vain, to kill Natalie.

Though Brenda is apparently killed at film's end, the final scene reveals that she did indeed survived and has started over with a new identity in another university, where she's free to fool another group of friends.
