10 More Insane Reasons Actors Didn't Return For Sequels
4. John Gavin Went Into Politics - Psycho 2
Being an actor is not like your typical 9 to 5 job. Typically, those in the business have a deep passion for what they do, and it's not like they are going to be counting down the days until they get to retire. This job is a privilege, and will generally be done as long as the actor can go.
However, that's not to say there aren't actors who do leave the job long before they need to. One step that has been a career trajectory for multiple actors, including the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan, has been politics.
This was also the case for John Gavin. The actor portrayed Sam Loomis in Psycho, who certainly isn't the first character you'd think of when Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece comes to mind, but he was an integral part of the story. When a Psycho sequel came around 23 years later, though Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles both reprised their roles, Gavin did not.
Instead, he had been appointed, coincidentally by Reagan himself, to be the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. Quite the career shift, particularly when a role in the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time was on the cards.
