10 More Movie Openings That Totally Trolled Audiences
1. The Jitterbug - Mulholland Drive
Audiences sitting down to watch David Lynch's surrealist opus Mulholland Drive for the first time probably weren't expecting the director of Blue Velvet and Lost Highway to open his new movie with... a dance montage.
The first 90 seconds of the movie are a bewildering-yet-upbeat collage of couples dancing the Jitterbug, composited against a garish purple backdrop and set to a jazzy, peppy musical score.
Eventually we see protagonist Diane (Naomi Watts) come into frame before Lynch fades to black, at which point the movie proper begins.
Even those who've seen Mulholland Drive numerous times might not fully appreciate what this scene is showing us - Diane winning the Jitterbug contest which eventually leads to her becoming an actress, a fact she only reveals in one of the movie's final scenes.
It's the last thing anybody expected to see kick off a dark, enigmatic mystery-noir from the mind of David freakin' Lynch: bright colours, happy people, and smooth music. But of course, as ever, he knew exactly what he was doing.
