10 More Movies That Killed Completely The Wrong Character

The Death: The first Pirates of the Caribbean is still, to this day, regarded as the best in the franchise. What follows next, however, experiences varying levels of success.

Hector Barbossa dies at the end of the first film, taking a bullet to the heart after Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann all succeed in lifting the curse that has seen members of the Black Pearl consigned to a lifetime of immortality and Barbossa’s involvement appears over when Jack shoots him at point-blank range.

Who should have died instead? Jack Sparrow

Curse of the Black Pearl sees Captain Jack at his swashbuckling best, Will and Elizabeth established as far more entertaining than your standard run of the mill movie couple and Barbossa blossoms in the role as antagonist, with his Black Pearl crew giving young children at times nightmares and even sending shivers down the spines of seasoned moviegoers worldwide.

And then comes the sequel, and the bizarre decision to resurrect Geoffrey Rush’s character. First of all, bringing back a character an audience has already seen die stinks of panic. Secondly, you really want the audience to believe that Barbossa would want Jack, already back again? Because if the answer to that question is no, then he's really not alone.

Jonny Depp's Jack is the undisputed star of the first movie and face of the entire franchise. However, he has only been legitimately funny in just one movie - the first one. He seems to get steadily less amusing with each film, with the second film bringing smiles and nothing more, the third seeing audiences sighing and the fourth and fifth having viewers tearing their hair out.

Disney rely on Jack to sell the movies because people still hold hope that the swashbuckling Captain Jack will return even if all the signs point to that never happening. Sparrow's ship has sailed.

Sport and Film. I love them both. And I'm extremely lucky to write about two of my biggest passions in life. Most of the time, I'm at the Daily Express newspaper writing about football, tennis and F1. But, when I'm out of there, I let my imagination run wild and pen down my thoughts on the film series' I love. WhatCulture gives me the chance to write about the movie industry - an industry I really care about. And for that, I'm extremely grateful. And hope you, if you're reading this, enjoy what I think about stuff.
