The Joseph Heller novel Catch-22 was met with widespread acclaim and the title has worked its way into normal language, describing a situation where two concepts are opposite but required. The most famous example is someone needing experience to get a job, but being unable to get a job because they have no experience.

This 1970 film adaptation follows the misadventures of Captain John Yossarian and his futile attempts to avoid flying the bombing missions where he is certain he will die. It featured Garfunkel of the "Simon and" fame, Martin Sheen and Orson Welles in minor roles.

While Rotten Tomatoes has it rated at 79% approval, most reviews were average at best. It did make back its budget at the box office, although not by much and a lot of its struggle is attributed to the film version of MASH being released and being compared unfavourably to it.

The death that occurred was the second unit director John Jordan, who fell more than a vertical kilometre while shooting an aerial scene. Allegedly, he refused to wear a harness while inside of the airplane and a gust of wind pulled him out of the open door to this death.
