10 More Times The Movie Killer Was Hiding In Plain Sight
3. Norman Spencer - What Lies Beneath
When Bob Zemeckis had the first half of Cast Away in the can, he made this crafty Hitchcock inspired ghost story while Hanks lost sufficient weight to resume filming. Lucky for whodunit fans, this is the film where Harrison Ford finally play a villain.
When Claire Spencer becomes convinced that she is being haunted by the ghost of her missing next door neighbour, husband Dr. Norman Spencer (Ford) thinks she's imagining things. A series of warnings from the ghost, however, reveal that Norman has indeed murdered his lover, a student of his, after she threatened to expose their affair.
There are plenty of clues here, right from the start: the missing neighbour is a massive red herring but the first tip off comes over dinner when Norman and his colleague discuss the University policy on dating students, a big giveaway but not the biggest.
That HUGE clue comes when Claire visits Norman at his laboratory one night. A handy expositional lab technician explains the application of Halothane, a paralytic drug that leaves a patient aware but unable to move. The focus of Norman's research, this drug features heavily in the last act as Norman tries to drown the perpetually sopping Pfeiffer.
If those clues didn't give the game away, this one might: Claire tells Norman that he is "so sensitive" and Norman just chillingly deadpans back "I'll just have to watch that won't I?" Ford finally goes full Temple Of Doom.
