3. Alien: Covenant
Release date: 19th May
Prometheus was a movie that divided audiences. Marketed as Ridley Scott’s triumphant return to the science-fiction genre, its links to the Alien franchise were kept remarkably well-hidden. While it was a visually striking piece of cinema, it received a lot of criticism for its poor dialogue and unconvincing scientist characters, and was somewhat overshadowed by Scott’s more successful The Martian several years later.
Alien: Covenant marks an attempt to bridge the gap between Alien and Prometheus. It’s a fully xenomorph-centric film, but the shadow of Prometheus’s engineers will hang over it, as will the presence of Michael Fassbender’s android David, who appears in Covenant alongside a newer model called Walter.
Joining Fassbender are the likes of Danny McBride, James Franco, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, and Carmen Ejogo.
Initial trailers seem to show a glossier Alien movie with a greater sense of scope than Scott’s original work. The alien itself appears to be composed using CGI, unlike the original xenemorph, which was achieved with an actor in a suit. It’d be unlike Ridley Scott for him to make a truly bad film, but fans are apprehensive about whether Covenant will be a return to form for the Alien series, or just another so-so sequel.
