4. The Dark Tower

Stephen King might be one of the most prolific writers of his generation, but his history with cinematic adaptations has been a mixed bag. In a year that will also see Pennywise the Clown returning to the big screen in IT, one of King’s most popular series will also be making its way to cinemas. Rather than a straight adaptation, Nikolaj Arcel’s movie is a pseudo-sequel to the Dark Tower books, and takes place after the ending of the final book.

The Dark Tower’s lore is complex and multi-faceted, as is its history in development hell. A filmic adaptation was first linked to director JJ Abrams in 2007, then Ron Howard in 2010, before it finally landed in the lap of Arcel.

As a science-fantasy-western-horror headlined by Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba (as hero and antagonist Roland Deschain and Walter Padick respectively), The Dark Tower will no doubt be one of the most interesting movies of the summer.
