6. Eihi Shiina - Tokyo Gore Police
Japan has never been a slouch when it comes to giving us gory movies, but the past decade has seen the nation produce a remarkable new wave of splatter cinema, much of it down to the efforts of special make-up FX madman Yoshihiro Nishimura. However, on top of being a master of gore to rival Tom Savini, Nishimura is also quite a film director in his own right - and his 2008 film Tokyo Gore Police was quite a game-changer.
An incredibly lurid and visceral vision, the film presents us with a near-future Japan in which a new race has emerged, the Engineers: bizarre mutations with cybernetic body parts.
Eihi Shiina (still best known for her terrifying performance in Audition) is Ruka, a member of the Tokyo task force charged with hunting down and destroying rogue Engineers - but while she's the best there is at her job, she has more in common with the Engineers than she might think.
However, while that synopsis might make Tokyo Gore Police sound like Blade Runner, the ridiculous levels of bloodshed and surreal, gross-out FX creations ensure this film is on a level all of its own. And, of course, some of the key gory sequences see Ruka unleash hell on Engineers with a chainsaw in each hand.
