5. Conan Lee - Tiger On Beat
It takes a lot to upstage Hong Kong action legend Chow Yun-Fat, the man who became the figurehead of the Heroic Bloodshed gun-play movies, pioneered by his frequent collaborator John Woo. However, the comparatively unknown Conan Lee managed to completely steal the movie from his co-star in 1988's Tiger on Beat.
Directed by Chia-Liang Liu, the action comedy was pitched primarily as an Eastern variation on the buddy cop movie format epitomised by Lethal Weapon, but, as a Hong Kong production, it boasts martial arts action sequences on a whole different level.
The most memorable of all these moments in Tiger on Beat is - of course - an epic chainsaw battle sequence shot in a frenzied, high energy fashion, with Lee's CID Office Michael Tso trading blows (not to mention sparks) with another Hong Kong legend, Gordon Liu.
Quite the career highlight for Lee, who sadly never quite took off as an action star, other roles including minor supporting parts in Lethal Weapon 4 and Big Trouble in Little China.
