10 Most Controversial Oscar Wins Of All Time

9. Forrest Gump

forrest gump At the risk of being hounded out of the country before dawn, I take this opportunity to declare, that in my opinion, Forrest Gump is one of the most irritating, self-indulgent, melodramatic films ever made. Personal feelings about the movie aside, Forrest Gump caused one of the most shocking upsets and controversies at the 67th Academy Awards. The Shawshank Redemption was the critical darling of the year and had none of Pulp Fiction's edge to warn off Academy voters, but Robert Zemeckis' schmaltzy melodrama swept in and stole the awards right from under Frank Darabont's nose. Whilst Shawshank's legacy has continued to heighten over the years, Forrest Gump becomes increasingly divisive and is one of the most polarising Oscar winners of recent times. People either love it or hate it. Whilst the fact that the film endorses hard conservative values is nonsense, it doesn't make it a good film. Tom Hanks was the Oscar darling in the 90's, becoming only the second person to win consecutive Best Actor Oscar's, the other being Spencer Tracy. The 67th Academy Awards is one of those times that they're going to look back on and feel disgusted in their selections, with the biggest travesty being Steve James' Hoop Dreams not even getting nominated for Best Documentary. This is also the perfect time to remind everybody that Robert Zemeckis has more Academy Awards than Stanley Kubrick.
