10 Most Controversial Oscar Wins Of All Time

7. Chicago

chicago 2002 was a strange year in Hollywood. Musicals were now seemingly back in fashion, Nicolas Cage actually made a good film and Catherine Zeta-Jones won an Oscar. And that's without mentioning Roman Polanski/Adrien Brody and The Pianist (more on that later). Hollywood got all nostalgic about musicals in the early 00's. Moulin Rouge sparked the musical revival in 2001 before Chicago cashed in a year later and won practically everything. Chicago is not as bad as some people say and the backlash against the film is because there were tens of more deserving films made that year but that's not the film's fault. Rob Marshall's directorial debut became the first musical to win an Oscar since Oliver! in 1969 but Moulin Rouge from a year earlier is much more deserving of that title. Much like last year when the Academy and everyone else was gushing over The Artist because it was a black and white silent film, Academy voters like to celebrate Hollywood history regardless of artistic merits, though The Artist was a very entertaining film. Deep down though, the Academy knew Chicago was a bit rubbish as the Best Director, Best Actor and Best Screenplay all went to Roman Polanski's Holocaust drama, The Pianist.
