10 Most Dark And Twisted Movie Scenes Of 2016
2. Tikkun – And You Thought The Neon Demon Was Bad
Sorry to inflict yet more necrophilia
on you so soon, dear reader, but 2016 was quite the year for taking advantage
of dead people apparently. But whereas The Neon Demon made necrophily look,
dare we say, sensual Tikkun makes Nicolas Winding Refn’s take on beyond the
grave sexual relations look relatively tame.
It’s a provocative drama from Israeli director Avishai Sivan that follows Haim-Aaron, a young rabbinical student who starts to struggle with his beliefs after a near-death experience. This starts to manifest itself in increasingly deviant ways that begin with becoming vegetarian (much to the dismay of his butcher father) and graduate to running away from home and experiencing a rather innocent encounter at a brothel.
So far, so tame. But that’s before Sivan hits us with a disturbing scene in which Haim-Aaron comes across a crashed car, succumbs to his growing sexual urges and digitally violates the female victim of the accident. She’s dead, there’s a prolonged full-frontal shot of her genitals and it makes David Cronenberg’s Crash look vanilla. Enough said.
Admittedly though, it’s a beautifully if eerily shot movie and a provocatively interesting meditation on faith that’s often funny in a dark kind of way. And despite it’s more controversial moments, film buffs adored it and it nabbed a good few awards at the likes of the Jerusalem Film Festival and the prestigious Locarno International Film Festival.
But heck, that scene is going to take a long while to forget.
