From one Guardian of the Galaxy to another, though when Yondu was first introduced into the MCU he was something of a villain for Star-Lord and co. They may have fought together on Xandar, but it wasn’t until their battle on Ego that Rocket and Groot officially welcomed him to the team.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 was largely about Peter Quill and the father issues he had. With his biological father being absent for his youth, he never really had anyone until Yondu abducted him. With what fans knew of the pair from the first movie, there was no reason to think they actually had such a deep relationship as they did.

Volume 2 explored this much deeper, and proved that Yondu had been more of a father to Quill than Ego ever had or ever would be. The only problem was that it took him sacrificing himself to save Peter’s life for his son to realise it.

As the two left Ego’s atmosphere, Peter was forced to watch Yondu die in his arms without being able to do a single thing about it. His death was harrowing, and the subsequent Ravager funeral was one of the best moments of the entire movie.
