Avengers: Infinity War had been building within the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since Thanos showed up in the post-credit scene of The Avengers seven years earlier. There was one moment however, that was anticipated more so than any other in the movie.

It was always going to be a massive movie, but the snap was something that was obviously iconic in the source material, and had even been alluded to in the trailers. This didn’t make it any less heart-stopping when the Mad Titan finally did snap his fingers.

Bucky was the first to be seen going, followed by 50% of the entire universe’s population. This included the likes of T’Challa, Sam Wilson, Wanda Maximoff, the majority of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and a lot of characters typically not expected to be killed off.

What made this so difficult to take was that this was the very end of the movie. The heroes lost. Thanos won. And it would be a year until fans had any kind of answers about what was going to happen next. Though all of the dusted heroes did ultimately return, their deaths weren’t taken back, they returned after being dead for five very long years.
