10 Most Divisive Movies Of 2016
6. The Witch
Robert Eggers directorial debut split critics and horror fans right down the middle and it’s easy to see why. The Witch is the kind of slow-burning, psychological horror that film buffs and critics wax lyrical about but mainstream horror enthusiasts deem not scary enough or even a tad boring.
Granted, it’s a very different horror compared to the glut of torture porn the horror genre has been overflowing with lately and if you went into The Witch expecting bucket loads of gore you’d come out disappointed. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t scary. What’s not terrifying about a baby being ground up for a witch’s potion, a grief-crazed woman breastfeeding a crow and a man being gored by a satanic goat?
Either way, it looks like Eggers is finding his niche in divisive horror movies. His next film, a remake of the classic 1922 silent horror Nosferatu, is bound to be just as divisive as his debut.
