10 Most Divisive Movies Of 2019
1. Ad Astra
When Disney hired a director of James Gray's uncompromising caliber to make a $100 million sci-fi movie, the results were always going to be unconventional and intensely divisive.
Though Disney tried their level best to market Ad Astra as a broad sci-fi spectacle, many were dismayed to find a far slower and more philosophical film than suggested by the trailers.
Most of the set-pieces featured in the marketing were actually relatively brief in the final movie, and despite its glossy veneer and the presence of A-lister Brad Pitt, this was more a contemplative character piece than a gonzo tentpole flick.
But it's also fair to say that those hoping for a fully "art-house" riff on the typical sci-fi genre film weren't entirely satisfied either, as some forced voiceover narration and one especially silly set-piece in the third act felt a little too pandering to the masses.
Basically, Ad Astra bemused more casual audiences, but even the savvy film buff crowd weren't quite sure what to make of it, and so, it bombing at the box office was a simple inevitability.
