Someone drunk on their own sense of power is a dangerous thing. This is essentially what Johann Schmidt was, a ruthless man with a god complex, who thought himself worthy of controlling the entire world. He came very close to it, too.

Aside from the fact that Schmidt was close to Adolf Hitler during WWII, and that he held every value that made the Nazis one of the most despicable, despised, and deplorable organisations throughout history, he had an agenda of his own.

Even within the confines of the Nazi Party, the man known as the Red Skull ran HYDRA, an organisation just as intent on world domination, but bowed to the majesty of Schmidt rather than Hitler. It was he who sought to use the Tesseract to bring HYDRA to the head of the global table.

He was a racist warmonger, he killed without remorse, and was set on dropping nuclear bombs across the globe until he was stopped by Steve Rogers. Had Captain America not been there to save the day, who knows what the modern world would have looked like thanks only to Johann Schmidt.
